Lighting

As we used the drama studio to film our performance aspects we were able to use the stage lights for the music video. As we could use these we kept the room dark and only lit the area where the band was performing.

The lead vocalist was easily the most lit member of the band which could suggest that he is the most important aspect of the video, which is common in most bands. It is similar to the music video 'Matters at All' by Kids in Glass Houses where the lead was lit far more than the rest of the band, who were mainly in the dark and he also was a more predominant figure in the music video overall.

The lead guitarist had a silver guitar, which reflected the flood-lights well and stood out from the rest of the video. This therefore puts more of an emphasis on it as it extremely eye-catching. The lead guitar is easily the most noticable part of the song - which lead us to conclude that it should be an important part of the video, the way that the lights were angled allowed us to give the lead guitarist a shadow, which makes him look more mysterious and important.

The bass-guitarist is usually the least filmed member of the band so we therefor made him the main character in the narrative, to challenge the norm. Due to his almost villainous part in the narrative we chose to light him only in red to make a connection between the performance and narrative even further.

We also used fairy-lights to emphasis how low-cost the video is. We found that this kind of lighting was popular in the indie music scene and was also used it the video L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N by Noah and the Whale. It added a but of extra light which we needed for some of the shots of the bands feet.

The day of filming was very dull and dreary, which was exactly what we wanted for the narrative aspects. From our research we had discovered that most indie bands use muted colours as a general scheme and we wanted to mimic this.  We therefor chose not to brighten any of the narrative when edditing.
