The Beauty Myth

The Beauty Myth is the idea that the 'perfect' female body is to be slim which has been imposed on women by the media industry. Men in particular then use this myth to control women. In society today it is adding pressures to young naive teenagers of what bodies they should attain in order to be 'normal' and to fit in. The images have been produced by the media industry providing the younger generation with images that they feel they need to be like.

Even from a young age when you get your first barbie doll you are shown a tall, slim doll, with long hair. From a young ages this is providing children with images of what is 'perfect' and the purpose of a barbie doll is to make her look beautiful  by dressing her up and brushing her hair. By barbie dolls being tall and slim it is giving off the wrong impressions of what they should look like themselves. By playing with these dolls it is providing the child with images and making them envious of their bodies and also advertising the wrong images of what is 'normal' and 'perfect'.

The Media Industry also use models in a lot of their advertisements. This is also giving off the wrong impressions to the younger generations, making them think that they should look like these models. implying that they should be 6ft tall and size 0. The media are giving off the wrong impressions of the beauty myth to the nation.
